Founded in 1953, the American Vacuum Society (AVS) is an international scientific society with approximately 4,500 members. The society supports research in fields such as materials science, surface and interface technologies, vacuum systems, thin films, plasma, and nanotechnology, and brings together scientists and engineers working in these areas. The Gaede Langmuir Award is presented to researchers whose scientific discoveries and inventions have made major contributions to the fields represented by AVS.
