Department of Tourism and Hotel Management, member of the Alliance by Institut Paul Bocuse, cordially invites you to the online seminar “Sustainable Tourism & Hospitality through the Lens of Applied Ethics” by Asst. Abstract
Why does it matter for tourism to be sustainable? Are green hotels, responsible dining and community-based destinations worth all the effort? Sustainability is perhaps the most dominant developmental paradigm in today’s tourism & hospitality – born of at least a sixty-year-old debate over the societal and environmental impacts of tourism. However, questions of its raison d’être are rooted in the ethical philosophy that spans millennia. In this seminar, the three pillars of sustainable tourism are analyzed as applied fields of prominent normative ethicalities: consequentialism, deontology and virtue ethics. Current, as well as previous research, is also discussed to suggest answers to the ultimate yet equivocal question: Is it ethical to be sustainable?
Short Bio
Semih Yilmaz, Ph.D., has been an Assistant Professor in the Department of Hospitality, Recreation and Tourism, California State University, East Bay. He holds a BA in Tourism Management from Bogazici University, an MBA from Bilkent University and a PhD in Tourism from University of Florida. He has previously worked as a specialist for the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, where he collaborated with international organizations such as OECD, UNWTO, and UNDP on tourism development projects. His main research interest is sustainable consumer behavior in tourism and hospitality settings.
