“The Empiricist Problematic: Treating Carnap’s Aufbau as a case-study”

Abstract: Here is the Empiricist Problematic: Starting with what is purely subjective, how do we get to the intersubjective, objective world? It is an old Problematic but, I think, intrinsically confused. The confusion can be brought out by considering the question: Who is the Subject of the subjective? I shall treat Carnap’s Aufbau as a case study on the Problematic, and discuss the difficulties he encounters in “constructing” other people and himself.
