Time: 12:40 -1:30 p.m.

Abstract:
Money is essential for our survival in today’s world. The core question which will be asked is “Do we want to live in a world where everything is up for sale?”. In recent decades, market values have crowded out non-market norms in almost every aspect of life. We have drifted from having a market economy to being a market society. In this seminar, we will discuss the question, “What role should money/market have in our lives?”. We will consider the influence of money on people, and examine the deeper effects that money has on our daily lives, including those we don’t even realize. What happens when market values begin to effect non-market values such as the donation of organs, the sale citizenship, or the use of cash incentives for children in order to promote good behavior? Is there something wrong with hiring mercenaries to fight our wars? Does this affect our notion of civic duty? Are there any kinds of spheres that should remain untouched in terms of market values? By focusing on specific examples, this seminar aims to brainstorm and discuss the less-talked-about roles of markets in modern society.
