Title of the Talk: Language as a Multimodal Phenomenon: The Coordination of Speech and Co-Speech Hand Gestures across Contexts

Date: Wednesday, March 6th, 2024
Time: 12:30
Place: A-130

Abstract:
Human language is a multimodal phenomenon, including the exchange of several multimodal communicative cues such as co-speech iconic hand gestures, which are spontaneous hand movements that co-occur with the relevant speech segments and represent object attributes, events, and actions. In this talk, I will present an overview of my current research that we conduct in my lab, Multimodal Language Lab (MuLab) in Kadir Has University. My talk will mainly discuss how speakers and listeners coordinate speech and co-speech hand gestures in both during language production and language comprehension across different speech contents (such as spatial vs. non-spatial contents) and communicative contexts (such as native vs. non-native language). I will conclude the talk by discussing my short- and long-term agenda for future research.
