Abstract:
I will use the ethological approach to discuss motor development in tufted capuchin monkeys, focusing on the use of tools for cracking nuts. I will first bring a historical view about how Ethology has dealt with developmental questions. Then I will introduce Development Systems Theory, Niche Construction, Perception-action and Embodied Cognition. I will use tufted capuchin monkeys’ nut-cracking skills to exemplify these concepts.
