Seminar: ‘Thinking Globally about World Politics—case studies’
Speakers: Monica Herz, PUC-Rio, Karen Smith, University of Leiden, Pınar Bilgin, Bilkent University
Room: A130
Date/time: 9 September 15:30-17:00
The ‘Global IR and Regional Worlds’ agenda of ISA 2015 has bifurcated into critiques of globality in IR theorising on the one hand, and exploration of regions on the other, with next to no conversation in between. In contrast, the emphasis of Bilgin and Smith’s book is not why or whether, but how to think globally about world politics. In the book, they draw on their expertise in the study of (international) security (Bilgin) and foreign policy (Smith) to further highlight different ways of thinking globally about world politics. In this seminar, Bilgin will introduce the book and the broader ‘thinking globally’ effort, Smith will present a case study on foreign policy and Herz on international security. The latter case is not from the book but from a recently published co-authored article. Herz and Smith are visiting Bilkent to work on another co-authored article.
