“New Horizons in Neuroscience”

Abstract:
Our brain is the most complex structure we know. The adult human brain has more than 80 billion neurons. Between 1,000 and 10,000 synapses terminate on each neuron, which corresponds to approximately 125 trillion synapses in the cerebral cortex. At each synapse, communication is regulated by hundreds of macromolecules located in the pre- and post-synaptic parts. Developments in recent decades have demonstrated the impressive ability of neurosciences to study this complex system with methods stretching 107 range of orders of magnitude on spatial scale and down to picoseconds on time scale. During this period, we generated an enormous amount of data from the submolecular to the systems level and have been able to successfully apply them to the diagnosis and treatment of neuropsychiatric diseases to such an extent that paralyzed patients could regain their walking ability by using brain-machine interfaces. Now it is time to complement this reductionist feat with a holistic approach to gain the first insights into how this fascinating system works as a whole.
