“Local-global Conjectures in Representation”
Abstract: Representation theory studies groups through their actions on vector spaces and translates questions about symmetry into linear algebra. A recurring theme in the representation theory of finite groups is the local-global principle: to what extent can global representation-theoretic information be recovered from the structure of local subgroups? This question lies at the heart of several major conjectures in the subject. In this talk, I will give an introduction to this local-global philosophy and discuss some of these conjectures, with particular emphasis on block theory. I will then explain how categorical and functorial methods provide a natural framework for studying such questions, and present some recent progress obtained from this point of view.
