“Grothendieck’s approach to the approximation problem”
Abstract: The essential part of the famous Grothendieck’s thesis was devoted to the approximation property (AP) of locally convex spaces. His ideas had a profound influence on future research on this problem. One of Grothendieck’s characterizations of AP was later used by Enflo in the first construction of a separable Banach space without basis. After this, substantial simplifications were suggested by Pelczynski, Figiel, Kwapien, Szankowski and others. We review some of these results.
