This second session of the lecture series will focus on the 1959-1960 Agreements concerning Cyprus and the destruction of the partnership envisaged by these agreements by the Greek Cypriots. The political and legal problems this entailed and Turkey’s 1974 Intervention as a guarantor country will be discussed. A brief overview of the recent history of the Cyprus issue will be provided, covering the establishment of the 1960 Constitution and the partnership, its destruction by the Greek Cypriots in 1963-1964, the separation of the two communities and the establishment of their own administrations, the ‘doctrine of necessity,’ UN Security Council Resolution 186 (64) and the arrival of the UN Peacekeeping Force on the island, and an examination of these developments from the perspective of international law. The 1974 coup aimed at Enosis, the Treaty of Guarantee, and Turkey’s intervention will form the main axis of the talk.
The language of the event is Turkish.
