Title: PROJECT URBAN DESIGN: URBAN SPACES OF DEPRIVATION
Abstract: Urban spaces of deprivation provide the potential fields for design projects. Placemaking is the goal of an urban designer, and spatial deprivation is the main motivation behind this design activity. This presentation covers the challenges of such “anti-places” which require urgent intervention, through cases of urban design projects realized in the professional arena, (re)searches on the educational field and experiments within the studio environment.
Bio: Berk Kesim is currently a Research Assistant in the Department of City and Regional Planning, Abdullah Gül University. After completing his BSc in city and regional planning at the Middle East Technical University (2006), he worked at Promim Urban and Environmental Design Ltd. as an urban designer between 2006-2011, where he participated in several national and international projects and won awards in design competitions. He worked as a Research Assistant at METU between the years 2011-2018. He holds an MSc degree in urban design (2009) and a PhD (2017) from the same department. His main research interests are phenomenology, environmental psychology, urban place, and design.
