Title: “Inclusive Design in Urban Environments”

Summary:
Our world is undergoing rapid quantifiable changes. This talk explores how our urban environments could be more all-encompassing, looking more specifically at inclusive design and multispecies design approaches to cater for all living species inhabiting and sharing the Earth, and drawing similarities between vulnerable groups’ invisibility, illustrated with examples from industrial design and public furniture.

Biography:
Oya Demirbilek is Professor of Industrial Design at UNSW Built Environment, where she held various positions. She was the Built Environment Associate Dean of Education, leading the curriculum development and enhancing students and academic staff’s experience (2013-17). Before this, she was Discipline Director for Industrial Design and Program Director for the Master of Industrial Design and the Master of Science (Industrial Design) Postgraduate Coursework Programs. Before joining UNSW, Oya was Assistant Professor at the Middle East Technical University (METU), Ankara. She was also an Instructor in Product Design at the prestigious Art Centre College of Design (Europe), La Tour-de-Peilz, Switzerland (1989-90). Oya is passionate about how industrial design can enhance life for everyone, particularly for an ageing population. As a designer-educator-researcher, she cares about designing meaningful products and better futures for all. Her particular areas of interest are co-designing and working with design research methods to create processes that help industrial designers define real problems, be more empathic and identify genuine needs for the products they create. Oya is also an award-winning designer and has exhibited her work in Istanbul, Ankara, Paris, and Sydney. She has two PhDs, one from Bilkent University, Ankara; and one from Marmara University, Istanbul; a Master by Research in Building Sciences and a Bachelor of Industrial Design from METU, Ankara.
