“Interview with the Chair of the 75th General Assembly of United Nations, Volkan Bozkır”

The role of supranational institutions in global politics and its effects to Turkish Foreign Policy will be discussed at the event jointly organized by the International Relations Department Representation and the International Relations Society. In the event moderated by Özgür Özdamar, we will have the opportunity to hear firsthand the reflections of our guest speaker, Ambassador Volkan Bozkır’s diplomatic career in Turkish Foreign Policy.

Mr. Volkan Bozkır, a graduate of Ankara University Faculty of Law, served as Foreign Affairs Advisor to the then Prime Minister Turgut Özal between 1987-1989, as the Consul General of New York between 1989-1992 and as the Private Secretary of the Presidents of the Period Turgut Özal and Süleyman Demirel between 1992-1996. He was Ambassador to Bucharest between 1996-2000, Deputy Secretary General for Political Affairs of the European Union between 2000-2003, Deputy Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 2003-2005 and Ambassador between 2005-2009 as the Permanent Representative of Turkey to the European Union.

He resigned from his position as the Secretary General of the European Union, which he started in 2009, in March 2011 and became a deputy candidate in the 2011 Turkish general elections. He was elected as Istanbul Deputy for the period. He was elected as the Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey in July 2011, and as the Chairman of the Turkey-USA Parliamentary Friendship Group in April 2014. He was appointed as Minister for European Union on 29 August 2014. He was reappointed as the Minister of European Union in the 64th Turkish Government established on 24 November 2015. In 2019, he received the votes of 178 of the 192 member countries and was entitled to carry out the 75th term presidency of the United Nations.
