Dear Colleagues and Students,

You are cordially invited to a seminar titled “The Grave of Saint Nicholas, Byzantium at Ankara 2020-2021 Fall Seminar Series.”

Date: 15 October 2020, Thursday
Time: 18.00 – 21:00 (Istanbul Time Zone)

Title: The Grave of Saint Nicholas
Speaker: Philipp Niewohner, Georg August Universität Gottingen

Abstract
In the guise of Santa Claus, St Nicholas has become an iconic figurehead of modern consumerism and as such achieved world-wide popularity. Before that, i.e. until the nineteenth century, St Nicholas owed his already considerable popularity in both the Western as well as the Eastern churches to the veneration of his relics that were believed to exude a wonder-working liquid or ‘myron’. Notwithstanding the medieval translation of the relics to the West, Eastern Orthodox Christians continued to visit the grave of St Nicholas at Myra/Demre and are still doing so today.
