About the Speaker: Professor AKIBA received his PhD from The University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology in 2003. His dissertation was titled “The Shari’a Judges in the Late Ottoman Empire: Appointment, Education and Social Origins.” He also holds a Masters degree (1996) from the same university with his thesis titled “The Ottoman Ulema and Medreses during the reign of Abdülhamid II.” His research interests include history of the Ottoman Empire, c.1700-1900, history of administration of justice and judiciary institution, history of education, social history of law, social history of intellectuals, history of the self and self-narratives, gender history and history of empires. He has several articles published in internationally reviewed journals, book chapters, book reviews and translations. He’s the author of the book Kindai-Isuramu no kyoiku shakaishi: Osuman teikoku karano tenbo (A Social History of Education in the Modern Muslim World: Perspectives from the Ottoman Empire). Kyoto: Showado, 2014., co-edited with Nobuya Hashimoto.
