Abstract:
The Department of History is pleased to announce a series of talks on the history of gender in the modern Middle East. The series seeks to examine how gendered identities changed between the late 18th and 20th centuries across the Ottoman and post-Ottoman world. Bringing together ideas of gendered beauty, sexuality, masculinity and sports and education across and between genders this series will present research from scholars based in Ankara and further afield.

Biography
Berrak Burçak received her undergraduate degree in English Language and Literature from Bilkent University in 1994. After completing an MA degree in Ottoman History at Bilkent’s History Department, she went on to pursue a doctorate at Princeton University, Near Eastern Studies Department. She completed her PH.D degree in 2005. Dr. Burçak teaches at the Department of Political Science and Public Administration. Dr. Burçak has published on women and modernization in late Ottoman history with special emphasis on modern Western science, hygiene and medicine.
