Abstract
City and countryside sound different, but Roman cities were very closely linked with their countrysides. Using evidence from the Göksu survey, this paper examines relationships between the city at Alahan and its dependent villages in the late Roman period. The major focus is on social and economic factors, though religious and imperial factors are also considered. Finally, the question of regional identity is considered, i.e. how did Isauria differ from other regions in Late Roman Anatolia?
Short bio.
Hugh Elton teaches Roman history and archaeology at Trent University in Canada. Earlier in his career he taught in the US and was then Director of the BIAA (2001-2006). He directed the Göksu and Avkat field surveys. Recent books include The Roman Empire in Late Antiquity, the co-authored volume on the Avkat project, Archaeology and Urban Settlement in late Roman and Byzantine Anatolia, and the conference proceeding Asia Minor in the Long Sixth Century (with Ine Jacobs).
