Abstract: Convergecast and broadcast communication constitute the core of reliable and energy-aware Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) operation. Although these many-to-one and one-to-many communication modes serve complementary roles in data collection, dissemination, and control, existing WSN configurations typically optimize them in isolation, leading to redundant transmissions, unbalanced energy depletion, and premature network failure. This paper presents the first integrated optimization framework that jointly determines convergecast and broadcast routing under multiple alternative configurations. We formulate a Mixed-Integer Programming model that allows nodes to act simultaneously in distinct functional roles across uplink and downlink traffic and supports flexible routing where upward and downward paths may diverge within each configuration. By decoupling these flows and enabling configuration alternation, the framework mitigates bottlenecks, balances load, and reduces collisions, thereby improving energy efficiency and prolonging network lifetime. We further examine the energy–configuration trade-off under joint optimization, analyze convergecast coverage requirements across deployment scenarios, and evaluate optimal solutions for both disc and grid topologies across wide parameter settings. Our results demonstrate that coordinated route design and flexible use of alternative subgraphs significantly enhance network longevity, scalability, and reliability compared with rigid, single-configuration approaches.
