Speaker: Yaprak Çakın
Title: “Space as Object, Object as Space: Disciplinary Crossroads Between Interior and Industrial Design”
Date: May 21, 2025, Wednesday
Time: 12.30-13.20
Place: FF Building, FB22
Abstract:
This seminar explores the relationship between interior architecture and industrial design, examining how these two disciplines intersect, collaborate, and complement each other in both practice and education. As spatial design increasingly demands user-centered solutions, technical detailing, manufacturability, and product-level thinking, the collaboration between interior and industrial designers becomes crucial. Case studies such as yacht interiors and stage/set design highlight how integrating spatial and product-based approaches can result in more holistic design outcomes. The session also briefly addresses how combining these perspectives can inform and enrich design education, preparing students for interdisciplinary practices. By analyzing these collaborative models, the seminar aims to shed light on the growing importance of integrating interior architecture and industrial design in contemporary design practices.
Bio:
Yaprak Çakın is a designer with a background in Interior Architecture and Environmental Design from Bilkent University. Her interest in product design, sparked during a product detailing course, led her to pursue a master’s degree in Integrated Industrial Design at Loughborough University in the UK. She has worked with international clients in both Turkey and the UK, gaining experience across different design scales and exploring how design interacts with space, culture, and material. She has also been involved in R&D and design development teams within companies embracing diverse design approaches.
Currently, she is a part-time instructor at both METU and Medipol University. At METU, she teaches Introduction to Interior Design in the industrial design department, and at Medipol, she lectures on Stage and Set Design in the interior architecture department.
