Abstract:
Traditional model catalysts based on single crystal and single crystal thin films with well-defined structures have been widely used for fundamental studies of complex heterogeneous catalysis, however, they have been mostly studied under UHV conditions greatly deviating from the conditions of working catalysts. Uniform catalytic nanocrystals with well-defined structures are an emerging novel catalysts that can be studied under the same conditions as working catalysts [1-3]. In this talk, I will present our work using uniform Cu2O cubes enclosed with the {100} facets, octahedral enclosed with the {111} facets, and rhombic dodecahedral enclosed with the {110} facets to explore surface structure-surface chemistry-catalytic performance relations in propylene oxidation reactions with O2 [4-6]. Our results demonstrate that uniform catalytic nanocrystals can not only serve as model catalysts extending the surface structure-surface chemistry relations acquired from single crystal-based model catalysts to the surface structure-surface chemistry-catalytic performance relations but also as the candidates for efficient catalysts.
