“Towards Human Sized Magnetic Particle Imaging”

Dr. Can Barış Top
Sensors & Imaging Technologies
ASELSAN Research Center

Date/Time: Friday, December 23rd, 5:30 pm
Place: Seminar Room, SC 106

Abstract: Magnetic Particle Imaging has been emerging as a nano-theranostic platform for a diverse range of applications in medicine, such as angiography, cancer imaging and therapy, functional imaging, and cell tracking. In vivo research on MPI applications has been limited to small animals using in-house developed systems or commercially available preclinical systems. Nevertheless, feasibility studies on large animal models and human subjects are necessary for translation of MPI to clinical use. In this talk, I will summarize the research and development activities in ASELSAN Research Center for upscaling MPI systems to clinical size. The focus will be mainly on the recent developments for whole-body open-sided MPI scanner magnet design, low-field Magnetic Resonance Imaging with MPI hardware, and high-quality image reconstruction methods with a low magnetic gradient.

About the Speaker: Can Barış Top is the head of the Sensors and Imaging Technologies Research Department at ASELSAN Research Center. He worked as a postdoctoral research fellow with the Focused Ultrasound Laboratory at Harvard Medical School between 2014-2016. He received his B.Sc. (2003), M.Sc. (2006), and Ph.D. (2013) degrees in electrical and electronics engineering from METU, and joined ASELSAN A.Ş. in 2004. His current research interests include biomedical applications of electromagnetics and acoustics, magnetic particle imaging, and nanoagents for imaging and therapy. Dr. Top is the recipient of the 2013 Parlar Foundation Thesis of the Year and the 2014 Serhat Ozyar Young Scientist of the Year Awards.
