Abstract:
This study examines public attitudes towards intimate partner homicide in the Turkish context, characterized by strong patriarchal values and orientations and widespread domestic violence. The study raises the following questions: To what extent and how does the gender of the offender shape public attitudes towards intimate partner homicide? More specifically, do patriarchal values lead to discriminatory attitudes towards the female offender? To address such questions, this study utilizes original experimental data, derived from an online survey experiment with a sample of university students (N=425), implemented in February-April 2019, and a population-based survey experiment with a nationwide sample (N=7240), conducted in October 2019.
Short Bios:
Burcu Özdemir-Sarıgil received her Ph.D. in 2018 from the Department of International Relations, Middle East Technical University. She also studied at the University of Cologne and the European University Institute as a visiting graduate student. Between 2004 and 2014, she worked as a research and project assistant at the Center for European Studies, METU. Between 2018 and 2024, she was a part-time instructor and post-doctoral researcher at Bilkent University. Currently, she is a part-time instructor in the Global Citizenship Program of TED University and also a member of the Women in Foreign Policy Initiative. She has been involved in various research projects funded by TÜBİTAK, EU Jean Monnet, EU IPA, and the British Academy. Her main research interests include EU politics, diffusion of international norms, women’s human rights, gender in foreign policy, violence against women, and new social movements. Her research has been published in such journals as South European Society and Politics, Journal of Balkans and Near Eastern Studies, and edited volumes of Routledge, Palgrave, Orion, and Bilgi University Publications.
Zeki Sarigil is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Bilkent University. His research interests include ethnicity, ethnonationalism, ethnic conflict; institutional theory (e.g., institutional change, path dependence, informal institutions); civil-military relations; and Turkish politics. He has published articles in such journals as European Political Science Review, European Sociological Review, Journal of Peace Research, and European Journal of International Relations. Dr. Sarigil has received scholarships, grants and awards from various institutions, including Fulbright, TUBITAK and the Science Academy of Turkey. He is also the author of the following books: 1) “How Informal Institutions Matter: Evidence from Turkish Social and Political Spheres” (Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, 2023); 2) “Ethnic Boundaries in Turkish Politics: The Secular Kurdish Movement and Islam” (New York: New York University Press, 2018).
