“Topological Quantum Heat Engines”

Abstract

Quantum heat engines are novel applications of quantum technologies that can bring about quantum advantages in thermodynamical processes. In my talk I would like to discuss quantum heat engines that use topological systems as their working substance, namely topological quantum heat engines. The first example is related to a two-dimensional topological insulator in perpendicular electric field, where we make use of bulk properties of the topological material to set up an engine. In the next example, I will discuss a nano-thermodynamical procedure to harness the novel boundary effects in the one-dimensional Kitaev Chain to produce work.

Elif Yunt received her PhD in Physics from İstanbul Technical University in 2015. During her postdoctoral studies, she worked in the field of kinetic theory of Dirac and Weyl systems in rotating frames at İstanbul Technical University and in the field of quantum thermodynamics of topological materials at Koç and Malta University. She completed a Tübitak-Bideb postdoctoral project on complex network description of quantum correlations in one-dimensional topological systems at Kadir Has Univesity. Since 2023, she is assistant professor at Energy Science and Technology Department at the Science Faculty in Turkish-German University. The main research interests of her group, Quantum Novel Energy Systems and Synchronization QuantumNESS, are quantum thermodynamics and quantum open systems.
