“Shaping the Future: on Third Generation Solar Cells”
Abstract
As the global demand for renewable energy sources increases, the development of efficient and sustainable solar technologies emerges as a critical issue. This seminar reviews the miscellaneous perspective of third generation solar cells, focusing on organic, hybrid, and perovskite architectures, with a comprehensive understanding on their potential and future implications. By blending recent advancements and ongoing research effort, this seminar highlights the key attributes and advantages of third generation solar cells. Furthermore, it highlights the challenges and opportunities in the fabrication, optimization, and commercialization of these emerging technologies. Through an interdisciplinary work confining materials science, engineering, and physics, this seminar illuminates the key mechanisms governing the performance and efficiency of third generation solar cells, with experimental data from ongoing research at Organic Electronics Laboratory of Yildiz Technical University. Moreover, it examines the broader social and environmental impacts of their widespread adoption of these technologies, underlining their key role in shaping the future of renewable energy production.
Serap Günes is a faculty member at Yıldız Technical University, Department of Physics. After completing her undergraduate and graduate studies at Yıldız Technical University, she continued her doctoral studies at Johannes Kepler University Linz (Austria) in 2002. In 2006, she completed her doctorate under the supervision of Niyazi Serdar Sarıçiftçi. Since 2014 she serves as a full professor at Yildiz Technical University, Department of Physics. She worked as a principle investigator in many R&D projects funded by Tübitak in the field of energy. In 2022, she was entitled to be supported within the scope of Tübitak Bideb-2247-A National Leading Researcher program, which is one of the most prestigious support program of Tübitak. In 2024, she was elected as a member of Energy Working Group of Turkish Academy of Sciences (TÜBA). Awarded by the Turkish Physical Society in 2007 for her work in the field of Physics and Energy, she won the “Prof. Dr. Şevket Erk Young Scientist Award” and “the Unesco Loreal Support for Women in Science Award” in 2009 for her project work. She carried out short-term scientific studies in Austria granted by the European Science Foundation (ESF) between 2007-2010.Also given by the Turkish Physical Society in 2017, she won the “Prof. Dr. Engin Arık Scientist Award”. She won the “Women Energizing Turkey Award” given by the Ministry of Energy in 2022. She is the author of 6 book chapters published in the field of energy. She participated in many international conferences as an invited speaker to present his work in the field of energy. Prof. Dr. Serap GÜNEŞ has published numerous scientific publications in internationally indexed (SCI/SCI-Expanded), highly influential and respected journals on the generation of electrical energy from solar energy using cheap and easy methods. She has received over 8.000 citations to these research according to Web of Science and over 11.000 citations according to Google scholar data.
