You are cordially invited to the second Neuroscience Department & National Magnetic Research Center (UMRAM) seminar of the academic year.
These seminars provide an opportunity for everyone interested in the interdisciplinary fields of Neuroscience and MR Imaging to come together, learn about the most recent advances, and have a chance to meet and interact with fellow members of our community. This week’s seminar will be delivered by Fatihcan Atay from the Mathematics department at Bilkent University.

Date: December 5, 2024 (Thursday)
Time and Venue: 16:30, NSC & UMRAM Conference Room (SC-06) Snacks and beverages will be available

Title: Delays and Dynamics in Models of Neural Activity

by

Fatihcan Atay

Abstract: Neural systems have been modeled at different scales. One can start from a large number of coupled differential equations describing individual neurons in discrete spatial space (neuronal networks), or work with locally averaged and homogenized representation in continuous space (neural fields), or even do away with space completely and investigate lumped models (neural mass models). This talk will consider the range of dynamics and complex behavior in mathematical models and indicate their possible connections to experimental data. Particular emphasis will be devoted to modeling time delays and their effects on the dynamics.

Bio: Fatihcan Atay has degrees in engineering from Boğaziçi University and mathematics from Brown University. He has worked at Koç University and the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics in the Sciences before joining Bilkent, where he is currently chairing the Department of Mathematics.
