The Bilkent Composition Department cordially invites you to a captivating portrait concert celebrating the esteemed Austrian composer Karlheinz Essl. This exclusive event promises to showcase an expansive array of works, offering a glimpse into the remarkable versatility of Essl’s compositions.
Highlighting the evening’s program are two seminal pieces from Essl’s renowned sequitur series. These compositions exemplify Essl’s innovative approach, incorporating a unique blend of live instrumental performance with electronic accompaniment generated in real time. As Essl eloquently describes, “The player is confronted with his playing, creating a
mesmerizing experience akin to navigating a house of mirrors, where identities become blurred.”
Joining us onstage for this occasion are acclaimed performers Ezgi Demirel (piano) and Jennifer Tipton (voice). Together with Karlheinz Essl himself, they will deliver a very unique performance.

Karlheinz Essl
Born in Vienna on August 15, 1960, Karlheinz Essl is an Austrian composer, performer, improviser, media artist, and composition teacher.
He attended the Vienna Musikhochschule from 1981 to 1987, where he studied composition with Friedrich Cerha and electro-acoustic music with Dieter Kaufmann. Additionally, he pursued musicology and art history at the University of Vienna, earning his doctorate in 1989 with a thesis on “Das Synthese-Denken bei Anton Webern.”
As an active composer, Essl contributed to the Projekt 3 composition programming environment of Gottfried Michael Koenig at Utrecht and Arnheim (1988-89), which later evolved into his own Real-Time Composition Library (RTC-lib) for Max/MSP/Jitter. He also served as composer-in-residence at the Darmstadt summer courses (1990-94) and IRCAM (Paris, 1992-1993).
From 1995 to 2006, Essl taught Algorithmic Composition at the Studio for Advanced Music & Media Technology at Bruckner University in Linz. Since 2007, he has held the position of professor of composition for electro-acoustic and experimental music at the Vienna University of Music and Performing Arts. In addition to his academic endeavors, Essl has collaborated with various artists across disciplines and has been involved in projects spanning electronic music, sound installations, and improvisation.
