“Knots in Surfaces, and Concordance”

Abstract: A classical knot is an embedding of the circle into the 3-sphere. The complement of a knot is a 3-manifold, and these are the building blocks of every 3-manifold. On the other hand, two knots are concordant, if we can find an annulus in the thickened sphere (which is a 4-manifold), co-bounding the two knots. Therefore, studying knots and the concordance of the knots, provide us with some tools to study 3- and 4-manifolds.
Knots in surfaces, are examples of knots inside a more general 3-manifold, and in this talk, we will go over some ideas from classical knot theory, extended to these new knots. In particular, we will define the notion of concordance for two knots in surfaces, and study the invariants which have some information about the concordance.
