Three main systems in the brain determine the behavior of an animal: cognitive system, arousal system and reward system. Reward has been defined as an integrated set of hedonic (i.e., pleasurable) and motivational processes occurring at both conscious and unconscious levels that elicit cognitive and behavioral responses. Studying this system allows us to better understand phenomena such as addiction, depression, eating disorders and etc. In a number of studies, we investigated brain circuits involved in the processing of reward in the context of drug abuse. We were interested to study each of those centers in the brain and their contribution to the function of the whole system. During the talk I will present results from animal models studies using a broad range of behavioral and electrophysiological techniques. Implications for translational studies will be discussed
