Title: Nolan’s Odyssey: A Betrayal or a Masterpiece?

Join us for an open debate on Christopher Nolan’s record-breaking summer hit, The Odyssey, which has split critics and classicists down the middle. While the epic’s English translator Emily Wilson slammed the film for lacking depth, calling it “an entertaining way to hide from the high temperatures for a few hours,” plenty of scholars and cinephiles have found the movie’s take original and satisfying. Five faculty members, including Homer specialists, will go head-to-head on the film in a moderated debate, weighing what the adaptation keeps, what it changes, and whether those changes work. Light refreshments will be served!
