Abstract: Dr. Zhou draws on her research examining mathematics standards and textbooks to explore how different curricula construct and communicate mathematical understanding. Through examples from her comparative studies of mathematics standards and curriculum materials, she highlights how these texts reflect particular visions of mathematical content, pedagogy, and learning. This talk invites participants to reflect on how curriculum shapes what counts as mathematics and how teachers can take an active role in curriculum design.
Bio: Lili Zhou earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics Education from Purdue University. Currently, she holds the position of Assistant Professor at California State University, Los Angeles, serving in the multiple-subject credential program and the single-subject credential program. Her research focuses on K-12 mathematics curriculum comparison, teacher professional preparation, and mathematics learning in informal contexts.
