Abstract:
Finding innovative approaches for learning and teaching has never been more important as new ways of learning, working and living are required. A report published by the European Commission (2018, p.12) said, “…education systems must become more flexible and dynamic, employing innovative approaches to learning and teaching …”. Educational innovation in classrooms rely on the teachers who shape it. However, the concept of innovation in education remains blurred and elusive in practice (European Commission, 2018). The aim of the Webinar is to provide a deeper understanding of the characteristics of innovative teachers for transformation of learning and teaching and the conditions to support innovative teaching. The Webinar is presented by three members of Association for Teacher Education in Europe’s Research and Development Community: Professional Development of Teachers. They engaged in a 3-year research project involving 16 countries. By sharing our findings, we hope to contribute to a better understanding of the characteristics of innovative teachers and how school leaders can support the professional development of innovative teachers. These findings have been published in a book: Livingston, K., O’Sullivan, C. and Attard, K., (2024). Characteristics and Conditions for Innovative Teachers: International perspectives. Abingdon: Routledge.
