“Shifting Heritage exhibition within the framework of European Heritage Days”
Abstract:
In the early 1990s, Bilkent University University embarked on a groundbreaking journey to create Turkey’s inaugural internet page. This pivotal moment will be explored in an upcoming exhibition and symposium for European Heritage Days, in collaboration with the Institut Français de Turquie.
The exhibition will immerse visitors in the creation of the inaugural internet page, utilizing oral histories and showcasing contemporary new media art. Drawing from the insights of French sociologist Maurice Halbwachs, it emphasizes that collective memory is dynamic, shaped by societal interactions and experiences. With the rise of digital technologies, collective memory has transcended, offering unprecedented insights into our shared recollections. Through web content and user engagement, digital technologies expand collective memory, revealing patterns of remembering and forgetting, and unveiling how it is shaped and sustained within the context of technology and new media art.
Furthermore, the exhibition delves into the 1990s fascination with new media art and the internet, tracing the evolution of academic design into specialized institutions fostering creativity and innovation. The Media Archaeology LAB display illustrates Bilkent University’s digital memory evolution, merging past and present technologies. A symposium organized as part of the Heritage Days will further enrich discussions around art, technology, and collective memory.
