CHEMISTRY 4.0-Expectations and Opportunities
Özgür Birer, Ph. D.
ASELSAN- Radar and Electronic Warfare Business Sector
Abstract:
We are at the brink of a new industrial revolution. Industry 4.0 can be described as the wireless communication and automation of all the equipment responsible for manufacturing. Naturally, the changes in chemical industry will start with manufacturing issues, however will spread towards day to day applications which affect all of our lives. For instance, as the number of mobile devices soar towards 12 billion in just a few years, a rightful question to ask is “Is there enough lithium in the world to run so many mobile devices or will there be new battery technologies?”
It is inevitable that new chemistry and new materials will be develop in the near future. These new materials will touch our lives deeply either directly or indirectly. For instance, components will be printed by 3D printers to lower the cost for production. The medical sector is an avid leader of the technology to 3D print tissues and even organs. The same sector pushes the frontiers for wearable chemical sensors to improve the quality of life.
How about the chemistry sector in Turkey? What is the current situation in exports, imports and R&D to adapt to the new revolution? How will we improve the university-industry collaborations and will we do it in time to enjoy the new revolution?
