A Female Aesthete: Violet Fane’s Fragmentary Memoirs
This lecture offers an overview of Violet Fane and discusses women’s life writing in the nineteenth century through Fane’s fragmentary autobiographical writings. Exploring three different versions of Fane’s unpublished memoirs, I will discuss the issue of self-censorship and consider the origins and causes of Fane’s reservations regarding life writing.
