We frequently receive excuses from students for not attending the class meetings, missing the exams or late submissions. Several issues arise when we receive an excuse, such as, the validity of the excuse, whether to accommodate the student, and if so, how to accommodate the student. And, we can also ask how we can design our courses in the first place in order to create a learning environment in which students with legitimate excuses are treated fairly and in which it is easier for us to handle student excuses when they occur.
