‘Neither peace nor dignity, nor beauty of life’: Connection, critique and community in the work of Vernon Lee
\nEssayist, novelist, art critic and antiwar polemicist Vernon Lee ‘very gratefully’ dedicated her 1899 collection of travel essays, Genius Loci, to ‘the cypresses of Vincigliata and the oakwoods of Abbey Leix’. In 1915 she dedicated her controversial antiwar morality play, The Ballet of the Nations, to the French playwright and pacifist Romain Rolland: ‘fraternellement. V. L. ‘ This lecture explores the connections between environment, interspecies community, internationalism and peace in Lee’s writing, situating it in the context of Victorian and modernist critiques of progress.<\/p>\n
Dr Ingrid Hanson is author of William Morris and the Uses of Violence (Anthem Press, 2013) and co-editor of Poetry, Politics and Pictures: Culture and Identity in Europe, 1840-1914 (Peter Lang, 2013). She is currently editing a selection of the works of William Morris for Oxford University Press. She has published articles and book chapters on a range of topics from Victorian medievalism to antiwar journalism, and is working on a new book project, Revolutionary Peace, which examines literary and political representations and constructions of peace in the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries.
