About the Speaker: Professor AKIBA received his PhD from The University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology in 2003. His dissertation was titled \u201cThe Shari\u2019a Judges in the Late Ottoman Empire: Appointment, Education and Social Origins.\u201d He also holds a Masters degree (1996) from the same university with his thesis titled \u201cThe Ottoman Ulema and Medreses during the reign of Abd\u00fclhamid II.\u201d His research interests include history of the Ottoman Empire, c.1700-1900, history of administration of justice and judiciary institution, history of education, social history of law, social history of intellectuals, history of the self and self-narratives, gender history and history of empires. He has several articles published in internationally reviewed journals, book chapters, book reviews and translations. He\u2019s the author of the book Kindai-Isuramu no kyoiku shakaishi: Osuman teikoku karano tenbo (A Social History of Education in the Modern Muslim World: Perspectives from the Ottoman Empire).
