This presentation will address the Ottoman efforts aimed at obtaining support from the Shi\u02bdite \u2018ulam\u0101 of Iraq during the first two years of the First World War.<\/p>\n
The presentation will start with a brief examination of the Shi\u02bdite commentaries on the Ottoman holy war declarations against Christian powersprior to the July Crisis of 1914. It will then discuss the extensive
\nOttoman efforts to secure support from the non-Hanafi \u2018ulam\u0101 for the Grand Jih\u0101d (Cihad-\u0131 Ekber). It will provide a detailed discussion and analysis regarding the significant fatw\u0101s issued by the leading Shi\u02bdite mujtahids of Najaf, Karbala, and Qazimiyya. The presentation will also examine the Ottoman diplomatic and intelligence efforts aimed at securing large-scale Iranian participation in the jih\u0101d campaign. Finally, the presentation will discuss the role of the non-Hanafi \u2018ulam\u0101 in the war effort.<\/p>\n
