Abstract: \u201cWhen rebel groups frame their movement based on a global identity, they often attract \u201cforeign fighters\u201d \u2013 those that leave their home country to fight in another \u2013 from around the world.<\/p>\n
Using data on thousands of foreign soldiers who joined the Islamic State, this article borrows hypotheses from existing work on ethnic civil conflict and terrorism to investigate whether conventional conflict correlates can explain ethnic participation in transnational warfare. Contrary to existing studies on ISIS, I find that economic inequality explains why some groups join the Islamic State. However, commonly used ethnic civil conflict variables, such as political marginalization, do not associate with ethnic group participation in transnational conflict. Overall, the results imply that socio-economic factors, instead of political ones, drive participation in ethno-transnational warfare.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
