Abstract: During brief windows of time accompanied by fast ripple oscillations, large populations of hippocampal neurons fire in ordered sequential patterns that correspond to their order during behavior. I will discuss evidence from rodent studies for this \u201csequence replay\u201d and its roles in decision making and reward processing during wake, and memory consolidation and network reorganization during sleep. Finally, I will discuss some recently-developed methods for the unsupervised detection of sequential firing patterns in neuronal populations using hidden Markov Models.<\/p>\n
About the Speaker: Kamran Diba received his Ph.D. in theoretical high energy physics from Brown University in 2002. He subsequently switched fields to computational neuroscience as a Sloan-Swartz postdoctoral fellow working in the labs of Christof Koch and Henry Lester at the California Institute of Technology, and then later trained in electrophysiology and optogenetics with Gyorgy Buzsaki at Rutgers University–Newark. Now at the University of Michigan, Dr. Diba’s research is focused on the roles of neuronal activity patterns during hippocampal network oscillations in memory and cognition.<\/p>\n
