Bilkent University\u2014the first private, nonprofit university in Turkey\u2014\u00a0was founded in 1984 by Prof. Dr. “hsan Do\u011framac\u0131, M.D. The school\u00a0admitted its first students in October 1986 and began the academic\u00a0year with 386 undergraduate and graduate students and one main\u00a0building. Currently, there are 13,000 students pursuing degrees in a\u00a0variety of fields.<\/p>\n
Bilkent University is located in Ankara, approximately 12 kilometers\u00a0(7.5 miles) west of the city center, and covers around 500 hectares\u00a0(1,200 acres). The campus includes three sites: Main Campus (location\u00a0of the University\u2019s administration and most of its faculties), Middle\u00a0Campus (location of the Faculty of Music and Performing Arts) and East\u00a0Campus (location of some of the University\u2019s vocational schools, the\u00a0School of English Language, and I.D.F primary and high schools). Faculty housing units are found on all three campuses.<\/p>\n
Currently, there are more than 180 state and private universities in Turkey. Each year, around 1,900,000 high school graduates take a\u00a0nationally administered examination to enter these schools. Many of\u00a0the students who perform best in the University entrance exam choose\u00a0to attend Bilkent; around a half of the University\u2019s students receive\u00a0various scholarships.<\/p>\n
The faculty is comprised of academic staff members from approximately 40 countries. Most hold Ph.D. degrees from universities\u00a0in North America and Europe. According to the ISI Citation Indexes,\u00a0Bilkent consistently ranks high in Turkey and also internationally in\u00a0terms of the number of published papers per faculty member.<\/p>\n
Bilkent University ranks 37th in the Times Higher Education (THE) BRICS\u00a0& Emerging Economies University Rankings (2017), 46th in the THE\u00a0Asia University Rankings (2017), and 76th in the THE 150 under 50\u00a0University Rankings (2017).<\/p>\n
To further enrich its teaching and research programs, Bilkent\u00a0University has entered into collaborative projects and exchange\u00a0programs with a number of universities abroad. At present, Bilkent has student exchange agreements with 293 partner\u00a0institutions around the world and about 900 international\u00a0students study at the University.<\/p>\n
