While much of the sector’s initial reaction focused heavily on the risks of academic misconduct and the need for restrictive regulation, practice is shifting toward recognising the potential of AI to empower teaching, learning, and assessment design. This session aims to move the conversation beyond seeing AI simply as a threat to be managed, to exploring how the technology can make assessment more efficient, authentic, and responsive to the needs of our new generation of learners.

Drawing on my experience as an education developer at Kingston University, a large institution with over 20,000 students and 2,000 staff, I will discuss how institutional policies can serve as a scaffold for innovation rather than a barrier. I will present practical examples of how staff are embedding AI into assessment processes to make them more authentic and engaging, and share how we are supporting them in this transition. The session will provide an opportunity to discuss how we can prepare students for a digital future while navigating the challenges AI presents to academic integrity, and compare experiences across two very different institutional contexts.

Dr. Aybige Yilmaz (SFHEA) is a Senior Academic Developer at Kingston University’s Learning and Teaching Enhancement Centre (LTEC). She plays a key role in designing resources to implement institutional strategies for assessment and feedback, including how staff can adapt to and embrace generative AI to create authentic, inclusive learning experiences. Drawing on her disciplinary background in Media and Communication and her former role as a School Director of Teaching, Aybige brings extensive faculty-level experience to educational development. She currently leads the Introduction to Learning and Teaching (ILT) and the Course Leaders Programme, supporting over 200 programme leaders across the institution.

Please see seminar’s video via the link.
(Please ask for the password: btlsc@bilkent.edu.tr)

Flipped Learning 2.0: Beyond the Basics

Date & Time: Thursday, 26 March Thursday from 12:30 to 13:15.

The session will be presented by Dr. Armağan Ateşkan and is open to instructors at all levels of familiarity with flipped learning, whether you have never tried it, have experimented with it, or are already practising it regularly.

Format: Hybrid (in-person and online)

In-person: G 160

About the Session

Flipped Learning 2.0 goes beyond the familiar idea of moving content outside class time. Highlighting recent advancements in generative AI, the talk critically examines its promise and limitations in supporting both student learning and teacher practices. While AI presents some opportunities for task automation and learning-enhancement, it also raises critical concerns regarding human agency, ethical considerations, and systemic inequalities in education. Drawing on decades of research in AI and education, the talk emphasises the need to move beyond narrow applications of AI for productivity gains. Instead, it advocates for AI systems that augment human competence, foster lifelong learning skills, and align with broader societal values. Using examples from his own work on multimodal learning analytics and human-centred AI, Prof. Cukurova underscores the importance of designing educational systems that embed AI within intentional, evidence-informed, and human-centred pedagogical frameworks.

Speaker: Mutlu Cukurova is a Professor of Learning and Artificial Intelligence at University College London.
