Film Screening: “Full Metal Jacket,” Stanley Kubrick, FFB-05, 6PM March 22 (EN)

Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket will be Bilkent Cinematics’ next offering, on Wednesday, March 22, at 6 p.m., in FFB-05.

Kubrick’s 1987 film is his contribution to the Vietnam epics appearing at the time, like Deer Hunter (1978), Platoon (1986), and Apocalypse Now (1979). In the first part of the film, we follow a group of US Marines through their harrowing basic training; in the second, we focus on them in the grim thick of Vietnam. Many audiences and critics were dazzled particularly by the first half of the movie, as it vividly revealed the tactics often used to prepare soldiers for killing. People were more divided on the ‘combat’ portion of the movie and its effectiveness. Everyone who sees a Kubrick film has a strong opinion about it, and Full Metal Jacket is no exception.

Critic Jonathan Rosenbaum calls it “profoundly moving,” and one of Kubrick’s “most horrific” films.

All Cinematics movies are screened with English subtitles, and everyone is welcome. Food and refreshments will be served just prior to screening, and discussion, also open to everyone, follows the film. For further details, contact Hossein Dabir at dabir@bilkent.edu.tr
