Film Gösterimi: “Vertigo,” Alfred Hitchcock, FFB-05, 18:00 6 Aralık (EN)

Bilkent Cinematics invites you to the last movie of the Fall semester, Alfred Hitchcock’s psychological thriller Vertigo, to be held on Wednesday, Dec.6.

Made in 1958, the story is that of Scottie (James Stewart), a San Francisco detective suffering from acrophobia (extreme or irrational fear of heights) who is asked to investigate the strange activities of an old friend’s wife. All the while becoming dangerously obsessed with her.

This classic from the master of suspense was poorly received upon release. However, its reputation has since grown. Vertigo was selected by the 2012 Sight and Sound Critics’ poll as the greatest film ever made ending the 50 year reign of Orson Welles’ debut film Citizen Kane at the top. “If Vertigo remains, unchallengeably, Hitchcock’s masterpiece, this is surely because the attitude to the unknown and mysterious is not simply one of terror but retains, implicitly, a profound and disturbing ambivalence,” says critic Robin Wood.

While Vertigo is seen by many as a great psychological thriller about obsession, it is far more complicated than that. The film is a masterpiece among masterpieces but what makes it so unique? Join our screening and post-movie discussion to find out.

Bilkent Cinematics aims to bring film lovers together and create a community through film screenings and entertaining, informative post-screening discussions. Each semester we host several film screenings, all by great directors, which we hope provide more insight and understanding into the themes of these influential films. In doing this we want to promote the development of film appreciation at Bilkent University and create an academıc communıty for all interested persons where they can express their passion for film.

Bilkent Cinematics is open to students of all disciplines who enjoy film.

Vertigo will be screened on Wednesday, Dec.6, 18.00, in FFB-05. Everyone is welcome. All Cinematics movies are shown with English subtitles. For further details, contact Hossein Dabir at dabir@bilkent.edu.tr
