In the lexicon of International Relations, influence is a ubiquitous notion, yet to be rigorously conceptualized, and a phenomenon, still under-theorized. The definitional debate over power is still prevalent in international relations with adjectival innovations. On the other hand, in the discipline of international relations, influence is still an infant word devoid of conceptual maturity despite some tentative and disparate attempts therein. In this presentation, a conceptual analysis of influence is expounded to address the curious absence of influence in conceptual and theoretical controversies of international relations. Especially significant is the intimate and intricate relationship between power and influence, which necessitates a systematic articulation. One final point pertains to the taxonomy of influence and the criteria over which to devise such a taxonomy. In brief, influence is a marginal concept in international relations, and this presentation is a call for empowering it!
