Summer School Individual Study Courses

This text is about how the Senate decision of October 25, 2017 (http://w3.bilkent.edu.tr/www/yaz-okulu-bireysel-calisma-dersleri-ve-butunleme-sinavlari-konusunda-senato-karari/ ) regarding Individual Study courses will be implemented this summer.

Qualifying students will have to make an application via SRS to take an Individual Study course in the Summer School. The application deadline is 3 June 2022, Friday (16:30).

In order to qualify to take an Individual Study course (in lieu of a previously failed course) in the Summer School of 2021-2022 academic year, an undergraduate student must satisfy all of these conditions:

  • The student must have a single unfulfilled curriculum course requirement in order to graduate. All curriculum requirements including zero credit courses are counted in this regard.
  • The student must have taken a course for this specific requirement in either the Fall or the Spring semester of the 2021-2022 academic year and must have failed it with an F or an FX grade. Students who have failed the said course with an FZ or U grade are not qualified to take an Individual Study course. If the course was taken in both semesters, only the Spring semester course is considered.
  • There should be no courses offered in the Summer School that the student can take to satisfy the said course requirement. In the case of an elective requirement, there should be no substitute courses that the student can take to satisfy the remaining requirement.

Individual Study courses are offered only in the Summer School. These courses may only be taken by students who satisfy the qualifying requirements listed above. Individual Study courses follow the same calendar as the Summer School. Each Individual Study section is taught using the exact syllabus of the course that it will be replacing. It is expected that the same instructor who taught the course in the regular semester will teach the corresponding Individual Study course. The only difference between an Individual Study course and the original course it is replacing is that the Individual Study course does not have regular scheduled lectures. Instead, the instructor is expected to meet with the student in their office from time to time and direct the student’s learning with assignments. All evaluation activities including homework assignments, projects, quizzes, midterm and final exams should be carried out as they would be in a regular semester course.
