GE 100 Orientation

What is the GE 100 Orientation Course?

GE 100 helps students learn more about university life in general and Bilkent in particular. It serves as a general orientation for incoming students, and comprises several different activities.

GE 100 is a 1-credit course, and is compulsory for all students (with the exceptions noted below).

Why GE 100?

You have worked hard, and now, at last, you are in the university setting. As is the case when making any fresh start, you may have some questions in mind. For instance,

  • What is a university?
  • What does it means to be a university student?
  • What life values does a university nurture?
  • Why am I at Bilkent University?
  • What are the principles, approaches and rules of this university?
  • What opportunities and services does Bilkent University offer?
  • How should I explore the campus and its environs?

The GE 100 Orientation will help you find answers to these questions.

What are the procedures for the GE 100 course?

GE 100 consists of several activities. The activity “E-mail and Library,” however, can be done any time up to the last day for course add/drops for the first term.

How is performance in GE 100 evaluated?

You will receive a grade for this 1-credit course, which is calculated on the basis of the number and point values of the activities you participate in. The activities are worth 1, 2 or 3 points each. The points that you receive for each activity completed are added up, and the total will determine your grade for the course as indicated in Table 1 below.

Table 1
Total points from activities
Grade Grade Point
12 A 4.0
11 A- 3.7
10 B+ 3.3
9 B 3.0
8 B- 2.7
7 C+ 2.3
6 C 2.0
5 C- 1.7
4 D+ 1.3
3 D 1.0
2 F 0
1 F 0
0 FX 0

Below are two cases showing how a student’s performance in GE 100 can affect grade point average:

Case 1: The transcript for a student who receieved “A” in GE 100:

Course Grade Grade Point Course Credit Weighted GP
ECON 101 B 3.0 3 9.0
SOC 101 C 2.0 3 6.0
MATH 105 D 1.0 4 4.0
HCIV 101 C- 1.7 3 5.1
ENG 101 C 2.0 3 6.0
GE 100 A 4.0 1 4.0
TOTAL 17 34.1
Grade point average at the end of the first semester
GPA = CGPA = 34.1 / 17 = 2.01
satisfactory

Case 2: Grade results for a student who receives an “F” in GE 100:

Course Grade Grade Point Course Credit Weighted GP
ECON 101 B 3.0 3 9.0
SOC 101 C 2.0 3 6.0
MATH 105 D 1.0 4 4.0
HCIV 101 C- 1.7 3 5.1
ENG 101 C 2.0 3 6.0
GE 100 F, FX 0.0 1 0.0
TOTAL 17 30.1
Grade point average at the end of the first semester
GPA = CGPA = 30.1 / 17 = 1.77
unsatisfactory

Please note that at the end of the first semester the grade point average (GPA) and the cumulative grade point average (CGPA) are the same.

Please compare Case 1 to Case 2. In the former, GE 100 grade is A, whereas in the latter it is F. The consequence is that even if all other grades are the same, the semester’s grade point average for the former student is satisfactory whereas it is unsatisfactory for the latter.
